Context: Thinking about Isaac Asimov’s “Franchise” short story. Written in 1955, it describes the 2008 election, in which one man is selected (the most “representative” of the American population) to “vote.” A machine called Multivac generates a series of questions (ex. What do you think about the price of eggs?) and uses predictive modeling to state the way the entire United States would vote. Norman Muller (2008’s selected voter) leaves the experience feeling patriotic and proud.
