Dim Sun

Maria Dahvana Headley

I chose the short story “Dim Sun” by Maria Dahvana Headley to read as its intriguing name stood out from the list of readings in the “Women Destroy Science Fiction!”.

I started reading the story with no expectation and somehow gradually started to enjoy reading Maria’s prose in describing how the main characters engage in dining in a fine celestial authentic restaurant. The story intrigues me of the concept of intergalactic restaurant reviews and how similar the social construct of this celestial fine-dining and reviewing are comparing to that existing now in our familiar earth context. This amuses me in additions with the narrative stories of the characters, their conflicts, and descriptive gourmet experiences of each (literally) stellar dim-sum dishes that smoothly escalated through the story.

The imaginative descriptions of each dish and how the characters experience them animated vividly and prompted me to imagine the biological beings and scales of each character and their supernatural, otherworldly abilities to live and consume such extreme cuisine. However, despite their superior beings, the characters’ conflict seems to be no more complicated than a basic relationship problem faced by any typical persons.

With basic conflict and settings familiar with our experiences yet narrated through imaginative and otherworldly elements and contexts, Dim Sun is definitely a fun read, almost passive yet spectacular ride of dining experiences beyond earth.
