Hungry Earth

Hungry Earth

Taking place in Havana, this story is about the Earth becoming hungry and “absorbing” energy from humans through tendrils. In this dystopian world, there are “splices” hybrids of cow-men, bird-men and Pig-men. These splices seem to run the place and have prejudices against humans even going so far as to burn down their farms. There are juxtapositions between carnivals, freakshows and the splices. The last carnival is described as being reliant on machinery to continue. One of these machines is the Scenter, which they sell to the carnival to pump out a “popcorn” smell. Researchers have been working on a similar project, “Projection based olfactory display with nose tracking.” This focuses on the spatio-temporal control of odor, rather than capturing and synthesizing an odor.
