The future is set in 2102 Boston Coasline. It is a time when plants have intelligence. It is also a time when water-pollution is exacerbating because of increased interaction between water and urban flood land. As plants are natural. Genetically-modified plants are used as low-cost material to monitor water qualities, because of their natural tendency to disperse and sensitivity towards hydrological change. These data are gathered and processed in a system called ‘Plant vigilantes’. This prototype is designed to show a futuristic interface of how plant-generated informations guide planners’ decision making.
Through this projection mapping, users will be able to see data with 3-dimensionality. Moreover, they can scroll through history and future predecation with hand swipes, this will help them to understand the city’s context and water flow tendencies in order to make more informed decisions. Last but not the least, they can make their decision with simple hand gestures, they can decide in which part of the city do they want to spend more money in planting.
This prototype has real world impact today. It can be developed into an educative game. In this game, pollution happens in the water, however, user can only operate on land. The process of using shoreline planting strategy to mitigate water pollution helps planner to understand that the treatment for a water-borne problem does not lie on the same location. On one hand phyto-remediation reduce the amount of pollution coming inland remotely, on the other, planting can prepare a city for the disaster in years to come. As a result, this projection making makes explicity the argument that planting, other than elevated construction is an alternative and more sustainable way of tackling sea level rise.
