Design and operation of consumer paradises

Things from my future

ARC – The World of 2060 ruled by cyber capitals with fully automations in material supply and ubiquity digital work for human labors in all professions. The upper-class people are nomads who constantly travel between consumer paradises for leisure and utilize their time in transit to work online; the lower-class are parasites who settle in slums among material sites filled with unmanned production lines. Without sufficient income for travel or consume in physical realm, parasites generally spend most of their time online to construct their virtual utopia for leisure.

Round 1: Temporary Paradise

T: Travel;

O: Event;

M: Pleasure

Given the premise of transportation networks for travel, nomads constant seeks activities for pleasure and often organize temporary paradises for leisure events such as cultural festivals, parties, and observation of ephemeral spectacles such as Starfall and animal migrations.

The shape of temporary paradise:

1. Drones and satellites survey the chosen site for a comprehensive analysis of geological and topographic features that may impacts the building of a temporary paradise.

2. Autonomous freight systems with hyperloops and aircrafts deliver all necessary materials to the site.

3. Robots with assemble an infrastructural framing structure which determines the layout of the ephemeral built environment and incorporates energy supply systems with solar panels and wind turbines. In some circumstances the structure also connects to the adjacent transportation infrastructures to deliver additional energy to the site.

4. Pre-fabricated components of housings and event facilities are delivered on site, plugged into the infrastructural framing structure, and shapes a built space for temporary usages.

Round 2: Assemblage test for floating paradises

T: Home;

O: Device;

M: Rationality

In addition to paradises operating or pop-up in specific places, there are also movable paradises in forms of trains, boats, and floating settlements which are considered both as the home and the means of transportation of nomads. With the sea level rise and expanding territory of water on earth, floating paradises become popular among nomads. A floating paradise is made by interlocked modular units with different programs including housing, commercial, entertainment facilities, warehouse, energy generator, etc. When docked at a seaport, these units can operate on their own with material and energy supports from the harbor. However, when a group of nomads organize a journey on the sea, they will have to design a scheme of floating paradise with rational ways of assembling different floating units to make sure the paradise can self-sustain in ocean for the planned journey.

As most other design tools in the world of 2060, the device of assemblage test for floating paradises can be access virtually. Participants from different parts of the world enter the program and conduct a VR meeting in which they can collectively assemble digital mockups of floating units to design the paradise like the way we play Minecraft in 2010s. The program tests each design based on their energy self-sufficiency, housing schemes, leisure opportunities, mobility, and flexibility to adjust layout in case if new units join the journey. When nomads settle the scheme, they can map the route in the program and get ready for the trip. A journey starts with powered units moving autonomously and picking up other associated units on the way. At the end of the journey, the paradise disperses with units detaching from each other and moving to different destinations upon orders from nomads.
